Bird Seed Boost for Dawn Chorus

Conservation award-winning Vine House Farm in Lincolnshire has given a boost to International Dawn Chorus Day (Sunday 3 May 2009) by becoming the official sponsor and providing every event registered on the International Dawn Chorus Day website with samples of their wild bird seed. The farm, owned by Nicholas Watts and his family, has worked in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts since 2007 and every sale of Vine House Farm bird food benefits the work of The Wildlife Trusts. 150 acres of Vine House Farm land are dedicated to growing sunflower seeds for its thriving bird seed business. Nicholas, who has always been passionate about birds, has worked hard to manage the farmland for the benefit of wildlife. Dykes have been dug; barn owl towers and bird boxes erected, weed margins, wildflower meadows and wild bird cover grown. The conservation measures employed on Vine House Farm are a prime example of The Wildlife Trusts' vision for A Living Landscape. Nicholas, who is a fourth generation farmer, said: "I have kept diaries of the birds around me since 1956, and tried my best to make my land a better home for them, so I can enjoy the Dawn Chorus in all its splendour. "Hopefully, by sponsoring Dawn Chorus Day 2009, Vine House Farm can help to raise awareness of the beauty of the UK's birds, and inspire people to help protect them for years to come."
