Foot and Mouth Disease

In 2001 a major outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK resulted in the cancellation of many events in rural parts of the UK. Fortunately many urban events and those elsewhere in the world were unaffected. Commenting on the event Chris Baines, Broadcaster and Vice President of The Wildlife Trusts, said: "Whilst we normally have hundreds of events throughout the UK, this year, due to the impact of foot and mouth disease, events are greatly reduced. However, birds sing just as loudly in city parks and suburban gardens as they do in rural natures reserves, so everyone can still share in the experience. The tragedy had a huge impact on rural life in the UK, far beyond its effect on IDCD.
