International Dawn Chorus at Moseley Bog - Where it all began!
RSWT
Moseley Bog
International Dawn Chorus Day is a global celebration of wild birds. Before dawn a group of expectant nature lovers gather quietly. As the sun rises the birds awake and fill the air with their song. On this special morning their gala performance has an appreciative audience. From a single event at Moseley Bog, Birmingham in 1984, it has spread all around the world. Bird lovers from countries around the world will be joining in this year’s International Dawn Chorus Day on Sunday 1 May with an early start. The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country coordinates the world-wide event each year, as ornithologists from every continent (even Antarctica!) gather to hear birds greeting the sunrise. This year thousands of people will take part in hundreds of events. Locally there are several events across Birmingham and the Black Country, but the global focus of this celebration of nature’s daily miracle will be a special event at Moseley Bog in Birmingham held by The Wildlife Trust. This is the very special place where the first public Dawn Chorus Day Even was held in 1984. It was the childhood playground of JRR Tolkien and partly inspired his books "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". Many places in the books can be linked to landmarks round and about, such as Sarehole Mill. The "Save Our Bog" campaign helped get our organisation established, and was the beginning of the world-wide Urban Wildlife movement. An event not to be missed at a very special place. Local naturalist and ornithologist Tony Sames will be on hand to interpret the wealth of birdsong.
